Aegean Türkiye
Lake Bafa and Mount Latmos
The largest lake in the Aegean Region, Bafa Lake, is located at the foot of the historical Latmos (today’s name: Beşparmak) Mountain and has a 50-kilometer coastline. The lake has a coast to Muğla and Aydın cities. Three small islands are located on the lake, and there are historical monasteries and churches on these islands. These islands can be reached with boats.
Bafa Lake is one of Türkiye's most important bird sanctuaries. In the spring and autumn, the west coast of the lake becomes the home and breeding ground of migratory birds. At sunset, the red lights of the setting sun provide visitors with unforgettable views and opportunities for unique photographs.
The ruins of the ancient port cities of Herakleia and Pyrrha can be found on the shores of the lake, which was once part of the Aegean Region of Türkiye. It is also possible to come across monasteries and historical caves around the lake.
There are many hiking trails on the shores of Lake Bafa and at the foot of Mount Latmos, offering different options for nature lovers. Ideal for beginners, the eight-kilometres route from Karahayıt Village to Yediler Monastery runs alongside ancient rock scripts along the way. A unique lake view awaits you at the monastery at the end of the trail.
The 16-kilometer route from Bağarcık Village to Kapıkırı Village is a more challenging and requires little experience. It has ups and downs. Another route from Bağarcık Village, stopping by the summit of Latmos Mountain and returning to the village, may be the most challenging of the routes in the region.
In addition to the routes mentioned above, you will see many other routes along the shores of Lake Bafa and at the foot of Mount Latmos. You can also create your own route between ancient artifacts and natural beauties!
